Week 4 highlights

Hip vis-a-vis the Internet
You do not need embark on a long, tiresome journey to enlightenment in search of big city dreams.  You simply need to plug in and instantly you are where you need to be.

Internet as the New Urbanity

The city was absolutely necessary as a breeding ground for hip. However, with the advances of technology, specifically the World Wide Web, the dependence of hip on urbanization is minimized. The internet is the new city, providing cover for marginal or radical ideas, as well as anonymity and protection for the person putting forth the ideas while simultaneously providing the largest stage imaginable.

Great Example!
Another example that jumps to mind is MODERN ART?!
Would anyone know who Andy Warhol was if it wasn't for the city?

The End of the Great War
As the new century wore into the 20's, returning veterans came home with a different outlook towards their country and began to express themselves outside of the norm.  As these expressions became more popular, those not within those specific groups or cultures began to enjoy, even emulate, the forms of entertainment provided.  The close proximity and higher numbers in an urban setting made the growth of hip what it is today.

Hip as a rural pastime

On a scale of 1 to 10, where do you think his level of giving a f*** what you think is? What I’m feeling right now is straight jealousy for that dude.

This is what you shall do . . .

A collection of 201-related ethos. I will do my best to live up to all of them:

barter real ideas instead of paying for others / embrace the mythology of religious texts / give those people a mirror who take their god literally and let them finally see who god is / sow your selfish ego as a growing young adult /  throw away all that you’ve obtained and fertilize a failing community when you’ve embraced the manhood or womanhood that resides within you / Do not claim to be open minded and not actually be. /  Read books rather than text messages unless you are late for dinner / be empathetic, patient and intelligent not necessarily in that order  /  Read Kurt Vonnegut, and take his teachings about Humanism disguised as science-fiction to heart. We don't know what, if anything, exists beyond this mortal realm. That shouldn't matter. /   Appreciate simplicity but Investigate complexity  /  Pray if you feel enclined to do so, Have songs in your ipod or in your sonnet,  /  You shall maintain integrity at all times, even when it hurts,   /   Question everything. Question books, the Bible..., teachers, lessons, lectures, everything.   /   Don’t be rude; don’t be mean it makes you ugly.   /   Laugh at yourself, more than others.    /   Life is too short  -  If there was ever a cliche to live by, this is the one!   /   Smile at random people daily.   /   Question anyone who says they have the answer.     /   Even while you're reading this, Hollywood plots against you.   /   Begin with the end in mind   /   Scorn those who promote evil.   /   examine an educational system that insists that all students are equally able to succeed.   /    Question the skew on the information relayed by the media.  /    Be skeptical about the wisdom of tattoos and piercings in light of their permanency.   /   Fear Nothing, especially Death, it comes for us all   /    Hate oppression, but not the oppressor, for they are oppressed themselves   /   Appreciation is Love's middle-child.   /   Be a weirdo   /    Be your own seamstress or tailor   /   Do not inject food poisoning into your face   /   Never  never give up.
