Week 4 highlights

Hip vis-a-vis the Internet
You do not need embark on a long, tiresome journey to enlightenment in search of big city dreams.  You simply need to plug in and instantly you are where you need to be.

Internet as the New Urbanity

The city was absolutely necessary as a breeding ground for hip. However, with the advances of technology, specifically the World Wide Web, the dependence of hip on urbanization is minimized. The internet is the new city, providing cover for marginal or radical ideas, as well as anonymity and protection for the person putting forth the ideas while simultaneously providing the largest stage imaginable.

Great Example!
Another example that jumps to mind is MODERN ART?!
Would anyone know who Andy Warhol was if it wasn't for the city?

The End of the Great War
As the new century wore into the 20's, returning veterans came home with a different outlook towards their country and began to express themselves outside of the norm.  As these expressions became more popular, those not within those specific groups or cultures began to enjoy, even emulate, the forms of entertainment provided.  The close proximity and higher numbers in an urban setting made the growth of hip what it is today.

Hip as a rural pastime

On a scale of 1 to 10, where do you think his level of giving a f*** what you think is? What I’m feeling right now is straight jealousy for that dude.
